BlackRock Launches iShares Bitcoin Premium Income ETF (BITA) on Nasdaq: Bitcoin Finally Gets a Paycheck

Bitcoin has always asked investors for patience. Buy it. Hold it. Wait for the price to move. There was never a paycheck along the way. No dividend. No monthly drop in the bank account. Just price charts and hope. That changes now.

BlackRock has launched the iShares Bitcoin Premium Income ETF on Nasdaq. The fund trades under the ticker BITA. It gives investors something Bitcoin never offered on its own. A steady income stream. And it still lets them ride the crypto market’s upside. This is not a small move. This is BlackRock, the world’s largest asset manager, telling Wall Street that Bitcoin is ready for income investors too.

What Is BITA?

BITA is a new exchange traded fund. It holds two things. Direct spot Bitcoin. And shares of BlackRock’s own iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF, known as IBIT. On top of that, the fund sells call options. It writes these options on roughly 25% to 35% of its IBIT holdings. The premiums collected from those option sales become income. That income gets distributed to investors.

In simple words, BITA owns Bitcoin. Then it rents out a slice of that Bitcoin’s future upside. In exchange, it earns cash today.

How the Covered Call Strategy Actually Works

This strategy is not new in traditional finance. It is called a covered call.

Here is the idea. The fund owns an asset. In this case, Bitcoin exposure through IBIT. It then sells someone else the right to buy that asset at a fixed price in the future. That right is called a call option. If Bitcoin stays below that fixed price, the option expires worthless for the buyer. The fund simply keeps the premium it earned. Pure profit.

If Bitcoin shoots past that price, the story changes. The fund may have to give up gains above the strike price on the portion it covered. The upside gets capped there. So the trade off is simple. Steady income now. Slightly less explosive upside later, but only on a part of the fund.

BlackRock’s Statement on the Launch

BlackRock did not stay quiet about why it built this product. Robert Mitchnick, BlackRock’s Head of Digital Assets, explained the thinking behind BITA. He said a large part of BlackRock’s client base loves Bitcoin. But that same group also cares deeply about yield. He noted that BITA was built to answer that exact demand. Investors get to keep most of their Bitcoin upside. At the same time, they capture potential income through a simple, exchange traded structure. No complex options trading required on their end. BlackRock handles that part.

Why BlackRock Built This Fund

Crypto used to be a one trick asset. Buy low, hope it goes high. Institutions think differently. Pension funds, retirees, and conservative investors often want cash flow. Growth alone does not pay monthly bills. BlackRock noticed this gap. A huge wave of investors wanted Bitcoin exposure without giving up income generating habits built over decades in stock and bond markets. BITA fills that gap directly.

It mirrors a model that already works well in equities. Funds like the JPMorgan Equity Premium Income ETF have used covered calls on stocks for years. BlackRock simply brought that same playbook to Bitcoin.

Inside BITA’s Fund Details

A few key numbers stand out for anyone tracking this launch closely. BITA officially began trading on Nasdaq on June 16. Bitcoin was priced near 61,825 dollars at inception, based on the CME CF Bitcoin Reference Rate listed in the fund’s prospectus. The fund charges an expense ratio of 0.65% annually. It targets an annual yield somewhere between 15% and 25%. At the same time, it aims to capture at least 70% of Bitcoin’s price upside.

Custody matters a lot in crypto. Coinbase Custody Trust Company holds the Bitcoin. Anchorage Digital Bank stands ready as a backup custodian. BNY Mellon manages the cash and securities side. Goldman Sachs and Co. LLC acts as the clearing agent for the fund’s option trades. The options used inside BITA are standardized and FLEX contracts. They list on Nasdaq ISE and Cboe Exchange.

BITA vs IBIT: What Is the Real Difference?

IBIT remains BlackRock’s flagship spot Bitcoin ETF. It is already the largest spot Bitcoin ETF in the world, holding close to 49 billion dollars in assets. IBIT simply tracks Bitcoin’s price. Nothing more, nothing less. No income. Pure price exposure. BITA borrows IBIT’s strength but adds an income layer on top. It uses IBIT’s massive liquidity to its advantage too. BlackRock pointed out that IBIT’s daily options trading volume sits in the top 1% of all options products anywhere, averaging close to 3.7 billion dollars in daily volume. That liquidity matters. It allows BITA to sell call options efficiently, without struggling to find buyers on the other side of every trade.

BlackRock’s Growing Crypto Empire

This launch did not happen in isolation. It builds directly on BlackRock’s already dominant crypto business. BlackRock issues the largest spot Bitcoin trust and the largest spot Ethereum trust in the market. Both have grown into some of the fastest growing ETFs ever recorded in financial history.

BITA adds a new layer to that empire. It is not just another Bitcoin product. It is a structured income product built on top of an already massive crypto foundation. Interestingly, BlackRock did not rush this idea. The firm first filed paperwork to launch BITA back in January. That means months of regulatory groundwork went into this single product before it ever touched Nasdaq.

Goldman Sachs Joins the Race

BlackRock will not have this space to itself for long. Goldman Sachs has already filed for its own Bitcoin Premium Income ETF. That fund plans to use a partial covered call strategy as well, closely mirroring BITA’s approach. This signals something bigger than one product launch. Wall Street’s biggest names are now racing to turn Bitcoin into an income asset, not just a speculative one. Yield seeking institutional money and retirement focused investors appear to be the real prize here.

Risks Behind the Reward

No income strategy comes free of trade offs. Option income shifts with market volatility. Calmer markets often mean smaller premiums. Wild swings can boost income but also increase uncertainty. Capped upside is the biggest sacrifice. If Bitcoin stages a sudden, sharp rally, BITA may not capture the full benefit on the portion covered by sold call options. Investors chasing pure, uncapped Bitcoin gains may find IBIT more suitable than BITA.

The targeted 15% to 25% yield is also not guaranteed. It depends heavily on Bitcoin’s price behavior and options market activity month to month.

Final Thoughts

BlackRock just handed Bitcoin investors something they have wanted for years. A way to earn income while still holding real Bitcoin exposure.

BITA will not replace IBIT. It serves a different kind of investor. One who wants cash flow today, alongside long term belief in Bitcoin’s future.

With Goldman Sachs already chasing a similar idea, this covered call Bitcoin ETF trend looks set to grow. Bitcoin is no longer just a bet on the future. For some investors now, it can also be a monthly paycheck.
